The Mental Matrix of MMA

For Christmas, my girlfriend gave me The Ultimate Fighter, Season 2- Uncut, Untamed and Uncensoredreality show on DVD.

Our place was a mess with shredded gift wrap paper strewn across the floor. And after our moment of holiday cheer reached its peak, we decided to watch the first episode.

Season 2 featured Rich Franklin and Matt Hughes as coaches, but before they could train anyone, three fighters were eliminated early on. One was eliminated due to injury, another quit after he experienced a panic attack and the last could not make weight and thus was kicked off the show. Three fighters eliminated, none fought.

It got me thinking about the importance of mental preparation MMA fighters go through. I've noticed elite fighters have strong mental frames, that is they are focused and determined to win. But it goes beyond self motivation and in fact, there's a scientific approach to it.

Today's professional mixed martial arts bouts are not just physical but are also cerebral experiences. Elite fighters focus their thought patterns to such a refined level of precision that the physical part of fighting becomes natural and intuitive. MMA training camps, in addition to using physical trainers and nutritionists, are also including sport psychologists who add another dimension to a fighter's training regimen.

Famed Personal Life Coach, Anthony Robbins is using the science of Neuro-Associative Conditioning to help Chuck Liddell prepare for this weekend's match against Wanderlei Silva.

Neuro Performance Training Systems are also used by IFL fighters like Chris Horodecki. A specialized system of visualization exercises enables Chris to reach peak performance during chaotic and unpredictable moments in a fight.

Georges St. Pierre understands the importance of mental preparation and has a sports psychologist as part of his training team.

"Brian Cain, my sports psychologist, has given me skills to train a part of my game that I never even knew existed" proclaims St. Pierre.

Georges St. Pierre and Matt Hughes have prepared on four weeks notice to fight for a third time. While Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva are both coming from back to back losses. They are all phenomenal fighters so the difference tomorrow night at UFC 79 may come down to which fighter has the sharpest mental edge.

Real Life Terminator Soldier in Action

I'm a fan of Terminator movies and the Halo series of video games, and the video below showcases a true life example of this robotic technology. This remarkable futuristic machinery is straight out of a sci-fi film. See this video below of a soldier demonstrating the powerful abilities of a robotic exoskeleton.

The World's Most Athletic President

Time Magazine has selected Russian President, Vladimir Putin as 2007's Person of the Year. This steely eyed former KGB agent stays in shape with various physical activities such as swimming, skiing, fishing, horseback riding and martial arts. He has a black belt in Judo. Here is rare video of the Czar showing off some Judo moves.

I've Never Seen this During a Fight

Here are two bouts from last week's WEC 31 event. It was a solid show and the main event between Urijah Faber and Jeff Curran had some good action. But a funny thing occurred which I've never seen before. At 3:33 (fight clock) of the 2nd round watch Jeff Curran wipe blood from his face using Urijah Faber's shorts.

Charlie Valencia vs. Ian McCall was my favorite of the night. The fight starts off with a steady even pace, next thing you know...WHAM! Someone goes flying through the air! Watch what happens at 2:02 of the first round.

Fight of the Year?

Spoiler Alert! If you haven't seen this fight yet, click here to watch it first.

I can't remember a more entertaining fight this year! In last night's The Ultimate Fighter Season 6 finale, Clay Guida and Roger Huerta delivered with flying colors...and knees. I had Guida winning the first two rounds, but the relentless Huerta landed two devastating knee strikes in the third round that knocked the wind out of Guida's sail. After the knees landed Guida was out on his feet, and Huerta picked him apart with a series of jabs and hooks. "El Matador" then applied a rear naked choke or Mata Leon (lion killer) which was the appropriate finishing move, considering Guida's long lion-like mane.

There were many entertaining upsets this year. But because this was non-stop, back and forth action from start to finish and due to the dramatic ending, I give Huerta vs. Guida my nod as fight of the year.

TUF 6 Finale: Best Main Event Ever?

Roger Huerta will face Clay Guida on the The Ultimate Fighter Season Six Finale and looks to be an action packed main event.

I give Roger a slight edge as he is a flexible fighter who adapts well no matter where the fight goes. Clay on the other hand, is a tireless and scrappy fighter who pushes the pace. And though I'd like to see a definitive end to this fight, I would not be surprised if it goes to a judge's decision.

I also look forward to hearing Kenny Florian's commentary during this fight. It's likely he'll face the winner sometime in February or March. But during a recent press conference, Roger has stated he deserves a title shot and called out Sean Sherk.

One thing for sure, unlike some of the drama queens of the reality show, Huerta and Guida have proven to have the hearts of true MMA warriors.
