Georges St. Pierre Strength Training, Workouts and Conditioning Videos

UFC Welterweight Champion, Georges St. Pierre is a new breed of fighter. His training program is scientifically designed. Everything from diet, conditioning and cutting weight is carefully calculated and planned. I’ve seen several of his training videos and below are the better ones featuring plyometrics, muscle tension weight training and sparring. He also talks about nutrition and supplements.

The first video shows St. Pierre's secret weapon; strength and conditioning coach, Jonathan Chaimberg.

"People laugh at me when I tell them what his fitness level was when he first came to me. 8 bodyweight chinups, struggled with 60 lbs dumbells, and had no core or stabalizers. Now the guy has seen unreal gains. Chinups with 100 lbs attatched, dumbell pressing 120's and has a 40 inch vertical, it's crazy." -- Jonathan Chaimberg.

The George St. Pierre diet.

St. Pierre doesn't have any special diet. In fact, he's been known to have his cheat meals and eat at McDonald's on occasion.

"I don't diet, except when I have a fight coming up. Eight weeks before a fight I eat as healthy as I can. I eat carbohydrates normally before my workout and after I stay with protein. My carbohydrates are moderate and my protein is higher. It's the protein that helps me recover. Otherwise, my calories are about the same amount throughout the day. I take a whey protein drink after each training session. I also take a lot of omega-3 oils. That's enough for me. It works. I do not take any multivitamins or mineral supplements." - For Men! FitnessRX Magazine, May 2008.

In the following videos, GSP shares his philosophy on fighting, and gives us a deeper look into his training and nutrition.

How does George St. Pierre cut weight? How much does he weigh the night of the fight?

Head trainer, Firas Zahabi provides some insight on how Georges St. Pierre cuts so much weight before a fight.

"It becomes a game. Now he’s on a protein and vegetable diet. Right now his exercise is significantly cut, but he’s going to shed water. It’s only temporary weight loss. It’s not real weight loss. You’re not dropping fat. (The final weight-cut) lasts about six days . . . By Friday he’ll have six or seven pounds left and we’ll put him in the sauna. I don’t recommend this to anybody, even professional athletes. This is somebody who’s very seasoned. As soon as the weigh-in is done (Friday afternoon) we’ll give him a recovery drink. We’ll even give him Prime (a workout supplement by Gatorade, which sponsors St-Pierre) because he needs the carbohydrates that much more . . . he’ll enter the ring at 192 or 193 pounds."

What other disciplines does GSP practice?

Just like Bruce Lee took up fencing to improve his fighting skills, Georges St. Pierre stays a step ahead of his competition by adding gymnastics to his training regimen.

"Georges is where brains meets brawn. Some fighters are very strong, very athletic, but not very technical not very smart. Some guys are very smart, but not very physically athletic. Georges is the one who brings the two together." - Firas Zahabi, head trainer.

How powerful is a Georges St. Pierre punch?

So we've seen him train, but just how powerful is Georges St. Pierre? How strong are his punches? His kicks? How about his superman punch? Let’s take a look at how all that hard training has paid off as ESPN's Sport Science demonstrates.

I just found your article and am interested in how this man was able to go from pretty much a weakling to the strength? How long did it take him to do this? Is there any recommendations on strengthening the core?
