How to beat Chuck Liddell in Five Easy Steps1. Watch a few of Chuck's old fights and note how he keeps his hands low and wide.
2. Circle around and switch stances and make sure you don't close the distance.
3. Chuck will eventually get frustrated and start chasing you.
4. When he throws a right hook, notice the "Hit Me Here" sign on the left side of his head.
5. Throw a hard overhand right toward the chin or temple area. Put your hips into it!
This is what I intend to do next year when I lay down my challenge to The Iceman while playing the UFC: Undisputed videogame.
But seriously, the brutal K.O. of Chuck Liddell at UFC 88 was indeed Rashad Evans's "Breakthrough" performance. And this was no ordinary K.O. either. It was a statement and a changing of the guards. Sporting a t-shirt of Bill Gates's mug shot, and destroying a legendary fighter, Rashad Evans figuratively and literally "stuck it to the man."Throughout his fighting career Liddell kept his hands low and has gotten away with it, but up until recently few fighters were able to take advantage of his bad habit.
Liddell acknowledges this flaw and has said, "it's something to work on."
The Ultimate Fighter Reality Show continues to churn out great fighters. I look forward to seeing TUF 1 and TUF 2 champions battle it out for the Light Heavyweight title. An end-of-the-year UFC main event between current Light Heavyweight Champion, Forrest Griffin and number one contender, Rashad Evans would be fireworks! It'll be a great way to lead into 2009.
The Gloves Were Off
But before that incredible K.O. of The Iceman, there was another somewhat shocking moment. It came during the Rich Franklin vs. Matt Hamill fight.Early in the first round, Matt Hamill landed a grazing blow that left Rich Franklin with a nasty cut under his right eyebrow.
What was shocking was not the nasty gash, but the fact that Franklin opted to use his own cutman who treated the open wound with his bare hands! Franklin doesn't know what his cutman is doing in between rounds. He could've been picking gum off his shoe or coughing into his hands.
Needless to say, I was pretty surprised to see that a cutman was treating a wound without gloves.
