Reading, Writing, & Rear Naked Chokes: Mixed Martial Arts Taught In High School
The New York Times reports of a unique high school club; The Winchester High mixed martial arts club. These high school students, tired of traditional sports like baseball and football, have turned to mixed martial arts."Alex Woudard, a freshman, said he did not like sports like baseball or football because they were too slow.
'I started a few weeks ago because I watch this stuff on TV and I wanted to do it for real,' he said."
In the two years since the club was founded, there have been no serious injuries. A vast contrast when comparing all the injuries associated with high school football.
The video that accompanies the article shows the students learning mixed martial arts in a safe and controlled environment. However, I did not notice any girls, but this may change as the club grows in popularity.
And since they are starting at a young age, it will be interesting to see the type of talent that may emerge for future generations of professional mixed martial arts.
So will mixed martial arts spread to other high schools across the country? If that is to be, the Winchester High mixed martial arts club may be the archetype for other high schools to model.
